Tax Software Data Conversion - ProSeries by Intuit


Thinking about switching tax preparation software, but concerned about converting your client data? We understand the importance of a smooth transition to you and your business. Our comprehensive and highly rated data conversions are free as part of your Intuit tax preparation package.

Purpose of Data Conversion Process

The data conversion process updates your existing data files to your current ProSeries tax preparation software. These converted files are then used to generate complete Tax Organizers and to transfer critical client data to next year's tax program. Because the converted files are designed to generate an organizer and transfer data to next year's tax software, the files do not produce a complete current year tax return for filing purposes.

Please note that we do not convert the following tax types/forms:
States, 990, 706, 709, 5500, etc.

How Do I Get Started?

Our conversion process is organized into 3 easy steps:

  1. Submitting your data
  2. Tracking the status of your conversion
  3. Using your converted data

1. Submitting your data

Prepare your media:

We accept only the following forms of backup media:

  1. USB Flash Drives (Preferred media)
  2. Memory Cards (CompactFlash™, SD™, xD™, MemoryStick™, and SmartMedia™)
  3. CD-R (Please do not use CD-RW)
  4. DVD +R/-R
  5. ZIP Disks

CD Backup Instructions

Please do not use any form of file compression when backing up your files.
All submitted media will be returned with your completed data conversion.

Backup your data:

Select that program from which you are converting from the list below. Make sure you follow these backup instructions closely to prevent any delays in the data conversion process.

Complete, print, and sign the conversion agreement form:

Please fill out and print the ProSeries Conversion Agreement Form.

Please pay special attention to the following lines on the conversion agreement:

  1. Begin Renumbering Clients From: Due to the conversion process, client files must be renumbered. We will renumber your client files beginning from 1000, unless you specify a different starting number. Please do not include non-numeric characters as they are not supported by the conversion process.
  2. Physical Address: Enter the physical mailing address to which you want us to send your converted data. As we ship all data conversions via overnight traceable carrier, this must be a physical address. Please do not enter a P.O. Box.
  3. Email Address: It is important to provide our Data Conversions team with a contact email address, as they use it only for sending you confirmation emails when we receive your data, and when your conversion has been shipped back to you.
  4. # of Disks or CDs Included: Please enter the exact number of media included in your submission.
  5. Total # of clients to be converted: Include exact number of clients included in your submission.

Ship us your files:

Due to the sensitivity of your data, we strongly recommend shipping your data to us using a traceable carrier (such as FedEx, UPS, or DHL) so your package can be tracked.
We advise not to use No. 10 envelopes for shipping your backup to us as they are usually damaged during shipping and the media is likely to be lost.

Please do not apply stickers/labels to CDs or write on them with ball-point pens as it can render the media unreadable.

2. Tracking the status of your conversion


ProSeries performs the conversions in-house and sends the converted data files back to you. You should receive your converted clients within 10 business days from the date our Data Conversion team receives your submission. Please note that large numbers of client files may require additional time for conversion.

3. Using your converted data

Restore your Converted Data

To restore your converted data in the 2006 ProSeries Tax program:

Your converted data will be loaded in the following default directory:
C:\CONV

  1. Open the 2006 ProSeries Tax program.
  2. From HomeBase, select File on the menu bar.
  3. Select Client File Maintenance, and then choose Restore.
  4. Click Set Source Directory, and then browse to C:\CONV.
  5. In the Type list box, select All Tax Returns.
  6. Click Set Target Directory, and then set the data path to C:\PROWIN06\06DATA.
  7. Click Select All, and then click Restore Clients.

Run the Year-to-Year Transfer

Follow these steps to run the Year-to-Year Transfer once you have received the Year-to-Year Transfer edition of the ProSeries program, which transfers your client data from 2006 to the 2007 ProSeries Tax program:

  1. Open the 2007 ProSeries Tax program.
  2. From HomeBase, select File on the menu bar.
  3. Select Transfer, and then select Transfer Clients.
  4. In Box 1, select All 2006 Tax Files to 2007 Tax Files.
  5. In Box 2, browse to C:\PROWIN06\06DATA.
  6. In Box 3, browse to C:\PROWIN07\07DATA.
  7. In Box 4, click Select All.
  8. In Box 5, click Transfer.
  9. In the Batch Transfer Selection dialog, select Tax Files, and then click OK.
    Your transfered clients will now automatically appear in the 2007 ProSeries Tax program.
