Refund Card Overview

Better serve your clients by giving them an alternate method to get their tax refund — on a Prepaid Visa® Card issued by The Bancorp Bank[1].

It's perfect for clients without a bank account and those who want their refund in as fast as 8 days instead of waiting up to 4 weeks for a refund check by mail.

Plus, it's also great for clients who just want to keep their refund separate from their day-to-day accounts.

The Intuit Refund Card is not a loan. It's simply a way to deposit a client refund directly to a Prepaid Visa Debit Card.

Refund Card Process

  1. What is the Intuit Refund Card?

The Intuit Refund Card is a Prepaid Visa® Card issued by The Bancorp Bank. It is a fast easy alternative to a printed refund check. In addition, it is reloadable so clients can use it just like a bank account.

  1. Who should consider the Intuit Refund Card?

It's perfect for clients without a bank account and those who want their refund in as fast as 8 days instead of waiting up to 4 weeks for a refund check by mail.

  1. What are the criteria for getting an Intuit Refund Card?

Intuit must abide by regulatory requirements to verify your client's identity before issuing a card. Intuit uses an external source to verify the validity of a client's personal information that you provide on the signup form. We will ask for your client's name, address, date of birth, SSN, and other information in a simple, easy-to-use online form.

  1. How do I sign my client up for an Intuit Refund Card?

You can apply for an Intuit Refund Card for your client directly within ProSeries. The process is fast and simple and you don't need to sign up with a bank or pre-order cards. You can apply for Refund Cards for your clients in Part VIII (direct deposit section) of the Federal Information Worksheet. Simply click on the QuickZoom button to open the signup form.

  1. How long will it take for my client to receive the Intuit Refund Card?

Once approved, your client will typically receive their Intuit Refund Card in approximately 7-10 business days, but times may vary by location.

  1. Can the Refund Card be used for both Federal and State refunds?

Yes, the Intuit Refund Card can be used for both federal and state refunds. There is one exception, the Intuit Refund Card is not available to people who reside in Vermont.

  1. Can I split my client's refund (i.e. put some of my client's refund on a Refund Card and some into a bank account or check)?

Yes, the Intuit Refund Card is a great option for clients who want to split their refund. You can apply for a refund card for your client on the Federal Information Worksheet, then add additional accounts or refund methods on the Federal Form 8888.

  1. What do I do if my client wants to adjust the amount of his/her refund deposited to the Intuit Refund Card?

You have the option to select the amount of the tax refund to be deposited onto your client's Intuit Refund Card and/or direct deposited into your client's bank account prior to electronically filing the taxes. Once the return has been filed, you will not be able to change the amount deposited onto the Intuit Refund Card.

  1. What happens if I applied for an Intuit Refund Card for my client, then my client changes their mind about the card?

Your client will be issued a Refund Card once you have successfully applied for the card on behalf of your client in ProSeries. If approved, the card will arrive to your client's mailing address within approximately 7-10 business days of creating the account. Even though a Refund Card was generated, your client can still choose another refund method prior to filing the return. However, your client should be aware that they will receive a Refund Card with no deposits on it. They can choose to use the card if they'd like to add money in other ways, even if they decided not to use the card for their tax refund. The client also has the option to shred/discard their unused card.

  1. Is 7216 consent required to offer and issue an Intuit Refund Card?

Yes, you must get consent from your clients. The appropriate 7216 forms will print with your return to make it convenient for you to get your client's signature.

  1. How do I add an additional card to my client's account?

You will not be able to issue multiple cards to your client. Your client has the option to order an additional card directly from Visa once they've received their initial Intuit Refund Card in the mail.

  1. Can I use my Intuit Refund Card to collect my preparation fees directly from my client's tax refund?

No. Bank regulations do not allow deposits where the name associated with the tax refund does not match the name on the card. The ProSeries QuickCollect product allows you to collect your fees from the client's anticipated refund. Learn more about QuickCollect.

  1. Why was my client rejected for the Intuit Refund Card?

Failed verification may be caused by, but is not limited to:
    • Address change
    • Recent name change, i.e. marriage or divorce
    • Personal information is spelled incorrectly
    • No information was found by external source

If your client fails verification, you can try to reapply using the following tips:
    • Confirm that the address is not a P.O. Box. We cannot issue a Refund Card to a P.O. Box
    • That the SSN is correct. We cannot issue a Refund Card to an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) filer.
    • A recent name change could cause the application to not match the information with our external source. If your client has changed their name within the last 12 months, try submitting the request under their previous name.
    • Try submitting the application with and without a middle initial

If your client does not pass verification, Intuit cannot create a card for them and you should choose another way to receive their tax refund.

  1. Can I deposit the refund of a returning client on the Intuit Refund Card I issued last year?

Yes, if the cardholder has the card, and the card is active. The card is active unless the cardholder called customer service to close the account or the card expiration date has passed. The card routing and account numbers are required. This information is available in the prior year return, or the cardholder can call the customer service number on the back of the card to get this information. If the card or account numbers are not available or the cardholder is unclear whether they closed the account, it is best to reissue a new card within ProSeries and deposit their refund on the new card.
